“It’s not just great fruit that makes great wine, it’s also the care and attention of every hand that touches it. We’re fortunate to have both great fruit and great hands to nurture it.”

With his college graduation behind him, Rob Lloyd focused his job search in the Napa Valley. He was fascinated by wine and the science behind the craft and wanted to learn everything he could.

While sitting in an interview, he had an epiphany and realized he didn’t actually want *that* job. He wanted to be a winemaker and went back to school for his MS in Viticulture & Enology. Rob began working in the wine industry and eventually it led him to Handwritten and Jessup Cellars. The rest is history.

Q: How did you get started in the wine industry?

A: Winemaker Rob Lloyd earned his MS in Viticulture & Enology from the University of California Davis and worked for many prestigious wineries including Cakebread, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, and La Crema. Rob began crafting Handwritten Wines in the 2009 season and took the position of Executive Winemaker at Jessup Cellars in 2010.

Q: What is one of your favorite varietals to work with?

A: Rob loves crafting terroir driven hillside and mountain Napa Valley District Cabernet Sauvignons from the Coombsville, Rutherford, Oak Knoll, Stags Leap Carneros, Calistoga, and Oakville AVAs.

Q: Is there a fun fact or interesting bit of information about your winery?

A: Our Napa Valley District Cabernet Sauvignons are created using open top fermenters with sub cap filters. These act like giant French presses, pressing the skin cap underneath the juice for an extremely gentle fermentation process. Because the skins are not exposed to air and we do not do punch downs, our wines remain very clean allowing us to use very minimal sulphur.

Q: Is there anything you want us to know?

A: Our new Handwritten Tasting Library in Yountville is under construction and slated to open late-autumn. ← The Yountville Live team is excited for this!!!

Q: What one of your wines is perfectly paired with a particular food and why?

A: Grilled Mediterranean Leg of Lamb with Handwritten's 2014 Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon is perfection.

You can also check out the Handwritten journal for a few recipes. The Red Wine Braised Lamb Shank with Risotto in particular caught my eye!

Q: Which celebrity chef would you most like to fix you a meal that would then be paired with your wine?

A: Chef Chris Cosentino

Q: Who is your favorite artist or band that you have discovered through Live In The Vineyard?

A: Rodrigo y Gabriela

Q: Who is your newly discovered band?

A: Lincoln Durham

Q: Last concert you went to?

A: ZZ Top and Kingsborough

One of our favorite things at Handwritten, besides the wine of course, is the ongoing ‘Somm Series’ held by the Director of Handwritten Wines, Philip O'Conor. O'Conor takes guests on an exploration of flavors with comparative tasting of Handwritten Wines against the world's greatest wine regions. It’s a great way to broaden your knowledge of wine in a multitude of regions.

Handwritten sources their grapes from several appellations and they make their selections wisely. Each appellation is unique and produces fruit differently. Learn more about the Handwritten appellations here.
